Gale Brown was born on May 10th, 1925 in Wyndal, West Virginia. He was drafted into the United States Coast Guard, and, at nineteen, became the Electronics Technician in charge of all the electronics equipment on his ship during WWII. He finished assisting to put the USS Sumner County (LST 1148) into commission, Then, he was informed that he was going to be in the initial invasion in Japan on November 1st, 1945, but Japan surrendered after the atomic bomb was dropped in August. After he came out of the service, Gale attended the University of Maryland and had two and a half years of Electrical Engineering but nearly going blind, changed his major and got a degree in sociology. Vocational rehabilitation then sent him to Catholic University, and after graduation, he was trained and certified as a teacher of the blind. After working for the Maryland State Board of Education, he eventually he transferred back to West Virginia and spent twenty years in the Clay County School system as a special education and regular teacher. He now enjoys writing about his military service during his retirement.
